So its the most unoriginal overused plot formula you could possibly decide on. This ring is run by a mega rich Keanu Reeves and his entourage who sets these fights up for other mega rich people to enjoy, oh and the cops are after them too. The reason he was chosen is because he is a skilled fighter in the art of Tai Chi which is unusual. He needs this dosh to help save his Masters temple which is in ruin. Yes that's your plot right there, a simple humble man is lured into an illegal underground fighting ring with the promise of getting paid lots of dosh. Presumably the story is similar to his actual life in the sense of trying to show or promote how Tai Chi can be a martial art, not that he entered an illegal underground fight to the death circuit. This film is based loosely on the real life events of the main lead Tiger Chen (yep that's his real name). Spoiler/Not Spoiler Alert (the sequel is listed in the credits above)! There is a part three/finale.The first film of 2013 set in the Far East starring Keanu Reeves, his second Asian film came out a month later (in the US). This movie is not for everyone, and it is far, far from perfect, but if you can check your brain at the door, it's diverting enough to be entertaining. Fortunately, it was fun and funny, never taking itself too seriously even when the big life or death battle began at the end. I won't get into the story, because honestly, it's convoluted. Even Angelababy looked Oscar caliber in comparison to Jayden, though he was far more convincing in fight scenes. In fairness, Jayden in only one of his two movie credits, wasn't a very strong actor so the movie needed people around him like Tony Leung Ka Fai who could act. All of which came crashing down when Angelababy's character was supposed to be a martial artist. Martial artists like Fung Hak On and Bruce Leung also gave the movie martials arts cred. Jayden Yuan, a real life wushu champion, played The Freak.
He ended up fighting most of the village and the Chief Master's daughter, Angelababy (more often than not), as he tried to convince them to teach him.
Problem was, outsiders were not allowed to learn any of the techniques. He escaped to the famed Chen Village where he hoped to learn kung fu techniques that would heal the wounds caused by his many battles causing him to be near death.
After his mother died, he was taken in by a master (Fung Hak On) and ended up on the wrong side of a battle against the ailing Qing army. The Freak was a martial artist born with a small horn on his forehead foretelling greatness.
